Coaching, consulting, speaking & selling information all require one thing to be successful ~ credibility.

If your potential client doesn’t believe what you tell them, they won’t buy.  In fact, this is true for every transaction, sale or negotiation.

One of the most important factors to build and enhance credibility with your prospect is your website.

It’s nearly 2012 and I’m sure you already know that you need a website.  But what you may not realize though, is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on your website for it to be effective.

Today I want to share a simple set of rules that you can use to rock your website, without breaking the bank.

In fact, if you follow my advice, you’ll have a credibility-oozing, lead-generating website  for less then $500, all in.

WordPress is a blog & CMS (content management system) that is a) free; b) easy to use; and c) infinitely customizable.

WordPress runs on a database, so you’ll need to get hosting along with it.  I use a service called MediaTemple, which allows me to host up to 100 domains for $20/month.

If you just have one website (probably all you need right now) you can get started for about $5/month at GoDaddy or HostGator.

If you don’t know how to install WordPress, go to and pay someone $5 to do it for you.

Once installed, you can customize with either a free theme or what’s called a “Premium” theme.  Try WooThemes, iThemes or ThemeForest for some incredibly powerful (and, at less than $100, pretty cheap) website designs.

Google “premium wordpress themes” for more examples than you’ll know what to do with.

Offering some free gift (also called an op-in gift, freemium or ethical bribe) in exchange for your prospective client’s name & email address is an absolute must.  There’s no debate here.

Most of the free and premium wordpress themes don’t come pre-configured to be able to do this easily, but fortunately there are two plugins you can purchase that will do the trick.

  1. Pop Up Domination
  2. Opt In Bar

* Full disclosure: the previous 2 links are affiliate links and I’ll get a commission if you buy using them.

Each has their own merits and drawbacks, so do your research, watch their demos and decide for yourself.  At $47 each, they are both good options to extend your wordpress site and begin capturing leads.

Not sure what to give them?  Consider one of the following:

  • Checklist
  • Special report
  • 10 Common Mistakes
  • Free training video (or video series)
  • Recording of an interview
  • Ebook or excerpt of your book

You get the idea.  Make it valuable and something you genuinely would feel okay charging for… then give it away.

Your website should be a reflection of you.  You should have an attention grabbing headline that helps your prospective clients know they’re in the right place and makes them want to read more.

You should:

  • Stand for something – nobody wants to work with a generalist, they want to know who you are and what you value.  If you align with them, they’ll want to work with you.
  • Be bold – tell them that you want to work with them, that you believe you can help them and why they should work with you.
  • Speak in your own tongue – don’t try and mimic the way other people talk, write the way you would talk to them if they were in front of you.

Look at my “Meet Paul Keetch” page.  It’s unique, unusual and when you read it, you’ll learn more about me than just what the words tell you.  I like to have fun, so I took a fun approach to writing that page.

While you *could* pay someone else to write this copy for you, you should be more concerned with getting it done than in getting it perfect.

It’s better to have an imperfect website than to have no website at all.

So get started today.  If you already have a website, but it isn’t producing the kinds of results you want, review it with these three rules in mind and make changes.

2012 is YOUR YEAR… your year to make more money, help more people and make a real difference in the world.
